Tourism refers to travelling from one place to another for recreational,
leisure or business purposes, usually for a limited duration. I intend to talk
about three technologies that have influenced tourism: the QR code,
applications and kiosk machines.
THE QR CODE
People or tourists travel from place to place using all
kinds of transportations. A lot of airline paper tags on luggage have been
replaced by the QR code. The letters QR abbreviate ‘quick request’. It can be
read quickly by a cellular phone. It stores much more information than the
information that could previously be found in airline paper tags. This has also
reduced the use of paper. The QR code can also be used to locate a person to a
certain buildings or attraction sites because it is also able to store images,
movies and it includes url links.
A kiosk machine is a classic vending machine with high tech
communication. Kiosk machines increase accessibility and availability of
resources needed by tourists. They reduce the need of human resources. They
provide language support. Some examples of kiosk machines are airport check-in
kiosks, bank ATMs, ticket selling machines, photo taking kiosks and currency
exchange kiosks.
APPLICATIONS
Useful applications to tourists are: google-maps, e-mapping,
e-journalist, e-travel book and the travel diary. These applications are
usually accessed by portable devices such as laptops, smart phones, tablets
etc. These apps help tourists to plan, sort, share information about their
trips.
Technology, like in
any other area, has influenced the tourism industry and the tourism experience
has just been enhanced even more.
